‘Kyiv Biennial. A Bird That Cannot Land’

The Kyiv Biennial has earned an outstanding reputation for presenting contemporary art in Ukraine and today it is particularly known for its critical documentation and artistic reflection on war. “A Bird That Cannot Land" focuses on the plight of Ukrainian artists in exile and looks at Berlin as a city of exile and diaspora. The Biennial is presented across a series of events across Europe including the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the M HKA in Antwerp, the Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture, the Dovzhenko Centre in Kyiv, and the Lentos Art Museum Linz.

Celebrate 30 years of Hamburger Bahnhof with a celebration that kicks off this weekend. Friday evening sees the launch of Berlin Beats (more on that under MUSIC below_ alongside the opening of a new group exhibition "A Thousand Times Berlin" featuring 70+ works tracing the Berlin art scene from 1989 to today. There’s free admission to all exhibitions, curator talks, tours, street food vendors and more.

Schinkel Pavillon presents Cecile Bevan's first solo exhibition in Berlin. ‘Reality or Not’ centers around the 2023 film of the same name which which examines the production of reality under conditions shaped by external forces. Politics, literature, cinema, and popular culture serve as a foil to the barrage of ideas, inviting audiences to release into possibilities of the many realities unfolding.

'Berlin, the Bitch and the Witch' casts a spell against the forms of capital that shape and exhaust life in the contemporary city. In the Western world, magic is often seen as a metaphor for the mystical, the sacred, and the imagination. But here, magic is a method. The artist-magicians work with movement, sound, irony, fiction, and irreverence to reveal what capitalism devalues: care, madness, healing, resistance, and interconnection.

Hošek Contemporary celebrates its 10th anniversary with a program of an improvised sound installation featuring Marina Cyrino on amplified flute, Richard Scott on modular synthesizer, and Jung-Jae Kim on tenor saxophone. They will also offer a book commemorating the decade, followed by a DJ set from Valerie Renay.

On Friday, check out the final vernissage of ARTCLUB Open Studio, a project that brings artists together to create, exchange ideas, and develop new works in a shared studio environment. It will be an evening of art, community, showcasing the works created throughout the project.

Speaking of new food halls, Charlottenburg also recently got a new one. Dufte launched a few weeks ago in the freshly-revamped Kant Garagen space. There are five different concepts, including one cafe that opens at 8:30 in the morning plus kitchens and bars that open at 11:30. The lunch menus are priced between €9 and €12, with everything fresh and handmade. There are also different events weekly, including tastings, DJs, an oyster night and World Cup viewings.

It’s beer garden season and there’s a new option waiting for you at Tempelhof. The Neulich Biergarten opens up this weekend for the season and a weekend of special programming including DJ sets, live music and World Cup public viewings.

It must be summer because the Kolonnadenbar at Museum Island is opening up for the season. Starting tonight, you can swing by for drinks by Vagabund. Entry is free and there will be programming all summer with DJs, performances and more. With one of the best views in the city, this is well-worth making a visit this year.
